Truck driver fatigue is a prominent and completely preventable cause of truck wrecks in the U.S. In fact, while trucking regulations are in place to try to prevent fatigued truckers from getting behind the wheel of large commercial vehicles:

  • Truckers may ignore and intentionally violate these regulations.
  • Trucking companies may encourage such violations and/or set unrealistic schedules for drivers, which can contribute to truck driver fatigue and collisions.

When truck driver fatigue ends up causing traffic wrecks, injured people should know that:

  • They are not alone.

Truck Driver Fatigue: The Prevalence and Impacts

Taking a closer look at the statistics and findings related to truck driver fatigue can reveal just how often this form of negligence occurs and just what its impacts can be. The following statistics and facts related to truck driver fatigue have been generated from data compiled by various trusted agencies (including, but not limited to, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety):

  • About 13 percent of all truck wrecks that take place in the U.S. each year are caused, at least in part by, truck driver fatigue. This makes truck driver fatigue the 7th leading cause of truck wrecks in the U.S.
  • While about 7 percent of truckers have admitted that falling asleep behind the wheel caused them to be involved in truck wrecks, more than 40 percent have conceded that minor fatigue has been a factor in at least one crash in which they’ve been involved in.
  • About 25 percent of truckers admit that, over the past month or so, they’ve fallen asleep behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle they were driving at least once.
  • When truck drivers are behind the wheel for longer than 8 hours, the risk of getting into a truck crash doubles.
  • On average, truckers get about 5 hours of sleep a night when they are hauling loads. After two consecutive nights of only sleeping for 5 hours, drivers’ abilities (including their abilities to perceive and respond to changing driving conditions) become impaired.
  • After 24 hours without any sleep, the impacts on drivers’ abilities are strikingly similar to those exhibited when drivers have blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of 0.10. This is 2.5 times the legal limit for truckers (as these limits are 0.04 for commercial drivers).
